Joseph White the father of ( Dr. Joseph White ) he was born October 11, 1737 in Lexington, Massachusetts the son of Joseph White and his second wife Mrs. Mary ( Whitmore ) Webber, the widow of Jonathan Webber. (See Hudson's Lexington and Lexington vital statistics). His Wife's name was "Lucy" as it appears on the records of the town of Templeton (afterwards the town of Gerry and then the town of Phillipston.) His name appears on the tax list of Templeton 1763 (see page 117 of Historical address on the 100th anniversary of the Congregational Church.)

He was selectman of Templeton in 1767. History of Worcester Co. 1879 Vol. 11 page 215 under town of Phillipston is found the following.

When the first Precinct meeting was held for the then new Precinct of Templeton, Phillipston (a part of Templeton) March 22, 1774 Joseph White was one of the Precinct committee and on page 216, he is given as one of those serving from Precinct in the Revolution (as are also his brothers, Thomas and Benjamin.)

Then in 1786, as the inhabitants of the Precinct desired greater privileges as a town, they had their territory set off October 20, 1786 and named Gerry, out of respect to Honorable Elbridge Gerry, Representative to Congress, who it is said offered to glaze the meeting house.

The first town meeting was held January 16, 1787, and Joseph White was appointed town warden. The Congregational Church was gathered November 16, 1785. The name of the town was finally changed back to Phillipston on February 5, 1804 for Lieut. Gov. William Phillips.

In the Settlement of the estate of Joseph White he is called Joseph White of Gerry. (see Worcester Probate book 64:358 A.)

The published vital records of both Templeton and Phillipston gave the births of children though those of Phillipston are more complete. He evidently recorded the baptisms in the Templeton Church then, when he joined the Phillipston Precinct Church, he entered the complete list there.

He must have married just before he settled in Templeton in 1763 as his wife's name dose not appear other than as " Lucy" and their first child was born in 1764. (Dr. Joseph)

Joseph of Phillipston died the last day of 1795. His estate was administered upon 1796, and January 13, 1798, his wife "Lucy" had her thirds set off, and his son "Dr. Joseph White of Hardwick" is mentioned. Worcester CO. Probate 64-358 A. Joseph White died interstate and the estate proved to be insolvent. Lucy White, widow was appointed administratrix. Her sureties on the bond were Dr. Joseph White of Hardwick, and David White of Gerry. In a petition of the creditors of the estate, September 18, 1797, this statement is made. Your honor has seen fit to accept two sons of the administratrix for bondsman of a very uncertain property. Among the signers were John Richardson, Thomas

The widow petitioned that the estate be adjured insolvent May 19, 1796. Her thirds were set off January 13, 1798. Abel White was appointed administrator April 1, 1817. In October 1820, a dividend was made after land was sold by the Creditors.

GREENEVILLE TENNESSEE

NOVEMBER 2, 1863

This is part of a letter to Dr. Ansell 6 White. About your son George W. White brother of Eliza, Everett, Caroline Abigail "Abbie", Frank, Lizzie and Winfred White United States Civil War 1861 to 1865

George W. White was killed in action 22 day of September 1863, in a severe fight at Blountsville, Tennessee, the regiment lost fifteen killed and wounded of Company E.

George was a Noble youth a brave boy a good Soldier and a generous Messmate. His last act toward me was an act of generosity as i have already stated in a letter to Mr. Jacab Potter we had stopped for dinner and George went out in search of something good for his sick comrade (George Hartell) to eat. Some good lady gave him a warm wheat cat.-:e a roll of butter and some apple butter. He called me to share it with him and while we were eating we first heard the booming of the opening canon we instantly quit our eating and mounted our horses and rode to the scene of action heard officers of other Companies remark how cheerful George dismounted and shouldered his musket and marched to the bloody conflict in the defense of our Country's right witch he seemed to fully understand and appreciate he fell at my side the first rally that was fired at us they were concealed in the bushes on the top of a Mountain and we were ordered to drive them from that position and we were advancing on them with Captain Baker ten steps in advance and George and some of us following. Thus fell a noble youth, by the hand of as mean a set of slave drivers as ever crossed Gods footstool. Captain Baker detailed Sergeant Julian Rees young John Barnett, Charles Barnett, James Hale, Presley Hall and Thomas Chambers to see that George was decently buried. He was buried at Blountville, Tennessee in Sullivan County. North east corner of the Burial Grounds. They cut his name on a board to mark his grave.

Yours Truly,
Eli J. Wamsley
