Last of the descendants of the John's. Sanford Austin who was born in Indiana had a son John who died in youth.
Previous to 1664 New York City was a Dutch Trading post called New Amsterdam, in this year there was a war between the Dutch and English. The English captured the Dutch. Charles II gave the Colony to his brother the Duke of York and New Amsterdam was changed to New York in honor of the Duke.
A John Austin came from England and landed in what was New Amsterdam then, his 3 brothers William, Sanford and Joseph came over, these names were carried on down through the family.
John Lester moved to Geneva, Ohio from New York, their nearest neighbor was 20 miles away.
One time when he went for supplies it took 2 days. A panther got after their cattle. His wife put their children in the attic and took a gun and killed it.
Another time he was gone an Indian came and brought a child and asked for bread, she didn't have any. The Indian took his knife and went toward her baby, she got a shovel of fire and held it at the child he grabbed his child and ran, just then John Lester came home, the Indian said he had a much brave woman and this Indian became their best friend.
This John is the one that married the Dutch woman. She delivered 99 babies. She road horse back mostly thru trails to their homes as there were few roads.
There was a time between the John from England and the one that moved to Ohio we do not know about. he was Sanford Austin's grandfather. John Lester was Horace Sanford Austin's father. Horace Sanford was the father of Rufus, Arthur, Charley, O'Dello, Clarence, Nellie, John, Elmai, Annie, and Fred. John Lester Austin moved to Indiana from Ohio in 1842.
This clipping was in the new newspaper a surprise birthday Party November 20, 1879 for John Lester 68 and his wife 64, living in Hart Township. Their children, grand children and relatives called at their home and spread a dinner fit for a king.
There was Thomas B. Miller, which was married to Mary Ann Austin and their 7 children. This was Lessie Miller's father. Lessie Miller's children are Mae Miller (Chester Holder), Mildred Miller (Parker), Laverne Miller (Harold McSwane), Dorothy Miller and Ruth Miller. Edwin Austin, which was married to Susan McKeeg and their family of 5, he, is the father of Eva Cox. John Austin and family of 6, Horace Sanford which was married to Abbie White and their family of 6, Rufus, Arthur, Charlie, Clarence, O'Dello and Fred.
W. Frank Knight, which was married to Olive Austin and their family of 5, Ike T. French and family of 5, Ordello Powers and wife (Ella). Rufus W. Hart and wife, J.O. Lynn and family of 5. Mr. Austin had lived in Hart township 37 years and has always been a Republican.
George Austin who lived in Plainsville, Ohio was a grandson of Sanford who was John Lester's youngest brother. George was a druggist and musician in Plainsville. He was a Baptist. David Lester was the father of Milo who sent this history to Ollie Coleman and was second 2nd cousin to Ollie Sanford Austin had two son's & three daughter's a son Bryon lived in Red Oak, Iowa a daughter lived some where in the far West.
Milo had brown hair and blue eyes. He was a Methodist, he seldom looked on the dark side of anything. He was a Republican and his pictures looked like Uncle Rufus Austin.
Letters sent by Milo were written in 1912 and 1919 to Ollie Coleman.
